When school doors close for the summer, many children lose access to the daily meals they rely on to stay healthy. In Washington state alone, over 250,000 children are at risk of going hungry during the summer months. Across the country, this seasonal food insecurity affects millions of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

To help fill this critical gap, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service supports a Summer Meals Program for children aged 18 and under. These free meals are available at schools, libraries, and community centers throughout the summer.

Locally, the nonprofit organization SHARE has been at the heart of this effort for over two decades. Last summer, SHARE served more than 12,000 meals from 19 locations across Clark County. This year, the program expands to even more sites, running from June 23 through August 8, and introducing a wider variety of lunches, including new hot meal options.

To support this vital work, St. Luke’s~San Lucas Episcopal Church is partnering with SHARE to offer nutritious lunches to children in need. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to caring for vulnerable children in our community. The church is also providing snack bags for adults who accompany the children, so that no one leaves hungry.

To help spread the word, our church produced a promotional video to reach out to local families and ensure no child misses out on a meal this summer.

Because no child should go hungry—especially when school is out.
